Let me begin by saying Daddy likes his stories. You know, movies, shows, Netflix, streaming media, etc. One day back in October of last year (2015) it occurred to me to go see what the latest was in "monitor glasses" or something along those line. I didn't really know what I was looking for. That's when I ran across the Samsung Gear VR headset (aka head mounted device or HMD). It didn't take long for me to realize this is exactly what I was looking for and then some.
As I investigated my find I began to learn that this is what has emerged as consumer grade virtual reality. Hence the "VR" in Gear VR. At the time Samsung had only released the "Innovator" Edition and it was going for $200. I wasn't too put off by the price but I soon found out the HMD was only part of the equation. I would also need to purchase a Samsung smart phone, one of the 2015 flagship phones such as the Galaxy s6 or s6 Edge (also the Note 5 I think would have done the trick). Currently I had a Moto X in my pocket that I had had for right at 2 years so as far as that goes I was well positioned to get a new phone.
It seemed like the stars were aligned for me and my HMD endeavor but should I take the leap without even trying one on for size? It was tempting but I decided to head over to Best Buy and test drive one. This particular location had an in store Samsung rep so I hit him up for a demo. Unfortunately they did not have one on display but he did me a solid and after looking both ways leaned over and said "Man, I shouldn't be telling you this but next month they are going to be releasing the next gen version called the Consumer Edition. It's gonna have a better interface and fit your head better plus it's only going to be $99". Much to my own demise I am a very impulsive buyer and it was all I could do to decide to wait but I managed. I set up a Google alert and watched and waited then bam! I was able to preorder it. A few weeks later it arrived at my front door.
